A mobile study to measure and predict lupus (SLE) disease activity using digital signals

The OASIS study is exploring how patient reported data and digital biomarkers, like activity level and heart rate variability, can be used to predict changes in lupus disease activity. You may receive a Withings Steel HR smartwatch as part of this study.

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:

Are 18 years of age or older

Are a resident of the United States of America

Have been diagnosed with lupus (SLE) by a healthcare professional

Use a supported smartphone such as an iPhone, Samsung Note, Samsung Galaxy, or Google Pixel

Are not currently pregnant nor trying to get pregnant

Smart devices can measure changes in your lifestyle and biometric data, like heart rate variability. When paired with algorithms, this data can help predict changes in lupus disease activity.

Complete weekly surveys on lupus flares and symptoms. Plus, share device data on activity and environmental factors

What is involved in this study?

This study can be completed from the comfort of your own home. There are no visits to clinicians included in the study. All you need is a compatible smartphone. Each week, you will be asked to fill out a collection of surveys and patient reported outcome (PRO) measures regarding lupus and associated symptoms. 200 enrollees will also be given Withings Steel HR smartwatches to measure activity levels, sleep, and heart rate.

What risks are involved in this study?

There are no risks to your health or safety by participating in this study. No changes to your lifestyle or treatment plan are included.

Will I receive compensation for participation in this study?

There is no financial compensation for participating in this study. However, 200 participants will receive a Withings Steel HR smartwatch to participate in the study. Upon completion of the study, the smartwatch is yours to keep.

What type of information will I contribute during this study?

Participants will contribute two types of data during this study: Survey data and digital data. Survey data includes multiple choice and short answer questions regarding lupus symptoms and flares and approved instruments like the SLEQoL. Digital data includes step counts (as a measure of activity), sleep metrics, location (to incorporate environmental factors like barometric pressure and allergens in the air), and heart rate.

What smartphones are supported for the OASIS study?

To participate in this study, you will need to download the LupusCorner Research app from either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. The app is compatible with most major devices and operating systems including Apple iPhone (running iOS 11+), Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9, Samsung Galaxy Note8 and Note 9, Samsung Galaxy S7, S8 and S10, & Google Pixel 2 and 3.
